Using satellite data and the behaviour of 15,000 scientific buoys, Nikolai Maximento and Jan Hafner of the International Pacificc Research Center have predicted the path that the debris from the 2011 Japanese tsunami will take.  After 1 year the debris will reach Midway Islands, and after 3 years it will hit the North American pacific coast.

Ultimately, following the path of the currents, the tsunami flotsam will end up in the oft-ignored North Pacific Garbage Patch – creating a grief-stricken addition to an already pressing problem.
